Franscisco Balagtas
Francisco Balagtas, who is commonly called Francisco Baltazar, was born in April 2, 1788. He was also called Kiko (as his nickname) His caring parents were Juan Balagtas and Juana dela Cruz, they were four sibling, and he was the youngest. After marrying Juana Tiambeng of Orion, Bataan, they settled happily and had seven children.
He exhibited interest in literature when he was just a little boy. He showed his talent writing poems. The greatest among his works is Florante at Laura that tells the story of his unfortunate life. The story also batter the unfair treatment of Spanish during his time.
When him and his family moved to Manila. He became a helper of Dona Trining, a rich woman. When Dona Trining noticed his hard work and loyalty to her, he sent him to school to study.
In Letran, he studied Humanities and Philosophy and finished 1812.
The two most important individuals that contributed to his success as a poet were: Dr. Mariano Pilapil and Jose dela Cruz (Joseng Sisiw).
In the year 1835, he moved to Pandacan, Manila, where he stumble upon a beautiful woman that will change the course of his life. She was Maria Asuncion Rivera (MAR). She became the center of Balagtas' literary works. But, the route to their happy love affair did not come quite easy. Mariano Capule, a rich and powerful man, and suitor of Maria used his influence to have Balagatas imprisoned. In 1835, he was jailed for the accuses he never committed, this what separated him and Maria. And later on, Maria married Mariano Capule.
While serving his sentence, Balagtas wrote his famous piece, Florante at Laura. It depicts his life, his misery and and despair of the society. Because of this work, he became popular. He was considered to be the "Shakespeare of the Philippines." He became the Ama ng Balagtasan. Balagtasan a duel through poetry.
1838 he was released from jail after serving his sentence. In 1846 he was again accused of ordering the shaving of the head of rich man's maid. He was again sent to jail.
In February 20, 1862, Francisco Balagtas died at the age of 74.
